Colleen Westlake

Candidate for Washoe County School Board of Trustee

Hi! I’m Colleen Westlake. It would be my great honor to serve as a voice for parents and children on the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees.

I’m a 5th generation Nevadan and family and God are my guiding lights. I have had the honor of raising three boys and being married for 32 years. We have four beautiful grandchildren and can’t wait for more.

I’m passionate about kids and animals, and have been actively involved in animal rescue for the past seven years. I’ve also volunteered at a Pitbull rescue and myself have four dogs, five feral cats, and a leopard gecko named Slinky. I’ve raised funds for animal endeavors as well as youth organizations.

For my education, I attended Fullerton Junior College and the University of Nevada, Reno, moving on to work in the dental field for over 30 years. I’ve enjoyed athletic pursuits, having been a high school cheerleader and participated in dance, softball, track, basketball, swimming, and skiing. I’ve been a dance instructor, a ski coach and a t-ball coach. I’ve been team mom to so many teams for my boys I can’t even list them all. I’ve been a room mom volunteer for Kindergarten classes, a volunteer for the Youth Wrestling Program, a cheerleading coach for five years, and on the Sierra Youth Football League Board for ten years.

I would like the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in Washoe County Schools. Firstly, I’m deeply concerned about the long-term impact draconian Covid restrictions in schools will have on our children, who are not severely impacted by the effects of this disease.

Secondly, public school curriculum is getting further and further away from basic, educational fundamentals and leaning more and more towards political agendas (which simply have NO place in schools). Teachers are becoming social crusaders and pushing values and ideals that should be addressed in the family setting.

Speaking of which, the family unit is being eroded and torn down as the state inserts itself where it has no business. Parents’ wishes are not being heard; those in charge blatantly disregard parents’ wishes acting as if they know best. The family unit is this country’s strongest moral compass and needs to be protected at all costs!

I look forward to the opportunity to serve the children, parents, families and community of Washoe County as a Trustee and I would love your vote.
